Press Release from Kim Epiphano

Einstein's Daughters

A New Dance Equation From Kim Epifano
January 17, 18 and 23-26, 2003 at the Cowell Theater

SAN FRANCISCO—The Bay Area's own force of nature Kim Epifano returns to the stage to challenge the laws of motion in her newest dance performance Einstein's Daughters, January 17, 18 and 23 26 at the Cowell Theater in San Francisco. Einstein's Daughters is a multimedia performance piece featuring a live sound score, dancing, special effects and aerial performances.

The piece finds its inspiration in the life story of Mileva Maric Einstein, Albert Einstein's first wife, who was a gifted mathematician. She is also, as Ellen Goodman of the Boston Globe wrote, "starring in one of the hottest controversies to hit the dry, footnoted world of historians and scientists." The jury is still out, but many scholars feel Mrs. Einstein was not only a stay-at-home mom but, in fact, may have played a part in creating the basic ideas of relativity.

Intrigued by the controversy, choreographer Kim Epifano uses Mileva¹s story to literally jump off into a gravity-defying investigation of her own theories of space, time and matters of the heart. Einstein¹s Daughters is the electrodynamics of moving bodies at their best. Epifano has brought together a talented ensemble, beginning with New York-based writer Marianna Houston, who helped with the concept development for the piece. Musicians/composers Sally Davis, Kate Regan and Kim Epifano play an original sound score live using violin, cello and other instruments from around the world and found objects such as birdcages. On the space-time continuum of the stage, Epifano will be joined by dancers Sri Louise and 11-year-old Fredrika Keefer. Aerial rigging has been designed by Richard Kittle, with spinning, whirling lights by artist Elaine Buckholtz.

For 22 years, Kim Epifano has been an innovator on the San Francisco dance scene. She was a key member of two of San Francisco¹s most influential dance collectives, Contraband and Dance Brigade. In the past five years, Epifano and her company Epiphany Productions have produced ten major works and have been recognized five times by the Bay Area Isadora Duncan Awards. The 1998 production Sonic Luminescence was awarded a San Francisco Weekly Black Box Award for "Best Dance Ensemble."

Einstein's Daughters was made possible through the generous support of the San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Fund, Gerbode Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund and the California Arts Council. The fiscal sponsor for Epiphany Productions¹ is Dancer¹s Group.

Einstein's Daughters is part of the "In Performance Series" at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center which is supported by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Fort Mason Foundation.
